Dunham must stop the spread of a plague after an international flight lands at Boston airport with no signs of life. After a colleague is almost killed in the process, she looks towards Dr. Walter Bishop to help her find the answers. However, the only way to get him to help after he has been institutionalized for 17 years is to enlist the help of his estranged son, Peter Bishop. The show is based around the idea of fringe science which uses methods such as mind reading, invisibility and reanimation of the dead. Watch Fringe not only to experience these controversial ideas, but to watch as the mystery unfolds and to find out the larger truth as to what really happened on that flight.
Throughout the series users will be introduced to a number of characters encountered by Dunham on her quest for answers. The journey takes her to a multi-billion dollar corporation where she meets some important associates that will help her and her partners to realise that there is something much larger at work, bringing them closer to discovering the truth.
The lead role is played by Dawson’s Creek’s Joshua Jackson as Peter Bishop, a smart guy but who has many gambling debts. The leading lady, Dunham, is played by Anna Torv who helps Bishop to confront the unexplained happenings. Australian stage, film and television actor, John Noble, plays the show’s genius Dr. Walter Bishop.
The pilot has been received well by critics. New York Times praised it for its special effects and intriguing storylines; E! Online recommended the show to any fans of Lost and Alias. Indeed, the show has many reminiscences of hit shows Lost, Alias and the X-Files, and if you liked those you should definitely watch Fringe for a show that combines the best aspects of all of these.
The series’ pilot cost $10 million to create and knocked Lost from the top spot of the most expensive pilot in history. Indeed the quality of the Lost pilot has certainly been matched, a great way to bring in a large base of Fringe fans. Yet it is more than equivalent to Lost, it offers its own unique set up and storylines that will get fans to watch Fringe and keep watching to see how the mysterious events will unravel.
The pilot was directed by Emmy Award-winning Alex Graves, and the series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions.
